[Stc_presidents-discuss] Welcome to the Presidents' Email List

Wow, Kim. You should be commended for "holding down the fort" in Phoenix!
That's actually pretty inspiring to read. (Had a great experience at your
conference, by the way, so good job!)

I also think having a big project is such a good idea. I will have to bring
this up at our next council meeting.

I'm already really appreciating this list so much!

This has been a problem in the Phoenix Chapter as well. 2015 will be my
third year as chapter president. In 2012 we survived a vote of dissolution
by one vote (essentially mine), and I agreed to serve as President. We still
had members and we still had plenty of funds to stay running, but no one
wanted to step up to run the chapter, so I ran it in 2013 essentially by
myself. I commend the Berkeley Chapter if you guys actually have a stable
officer corps other than president!

My best advice is to have a major project going each year that chapter
members can rally around and from which you can choose top volunteers to
help out as officers. In 2013/2014 our project was "hosting" Summit 2014 and
we had a committee of about 8 people from which I was able to get a VP and
Secretary/Treasurer for 2014 and VP for 2015. In the second half of 2014 it
was a website revamp project from which I culled a Membership Chair and
Secretary/Treasurer for 2015. In 2015 we plan to hold our first publications
competition in nearly 10 years, and I hope to find more volunteers from that
project as well, especially since my major personal goal will be to serve as
Immediate Past President in 2016.

I will introduce myself. I am the outgoing president of the Berkeley
chapter. Sorta. The chapter just finished its annual election, and we had
nobody to run for the vacant office. So I expect to be Acting President for
some time yet.

Perhaps this is a problem other chapters have run into: lack of energetic
and talented people to volunteer. Over the last 11 years, the Berkeley
chapter has had only different people in the office of president, and one
year with nobody in that office. How do you find and nurture new volunteers
who can eventually hold chapter office?

Good morning!

My name is Cindy Pao, and I am the team lead for the Outreach Team on the
Community Affairs Committee.

This email is your notice that the Presidents' email list is officially
online. Thank you to everyone who has advocated for this list and helped
round up email addresses.

I suspect that some people will receive this email twice. Where it has been
possible, I've added the email alias for a chapter's president as well as
any personal email address I have for a chapter president. If you receive
the email twice, you can decide whether you want to leave both email
addresses subscribed or remove one of them.

I encourage you to use this email list to communicate with each other -
especially with the information sharing encouraged by the CAA - and ask
around about best practices.

Also know that the entire Outreach team is subscribed to this email list so
that we know when you need help.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

"In London, my wife and I knew we would never take a bus, because we are
American, and Americans do not take buses. We're never sure how to get on
them or how to pay, and we're always afraid they'll suddenly go in the wrong
direction. I'm not saying Americans are unadventurous. We tamed the West and
went to the Moon. But we did not do these things in buses. " Dave Barry 2014
